Description

The Library Extension provides a number of configuration options to customize your experience. Most of these live on the extension’s settings page: right-click the Library Extension icon in your browser’s toolbar and choose Options (or open the popup and click through to Catalog Management) to get there.

Library Names

Users can choose how the library name links behave in the extension. The available options are:

• Library URL (default)
  Makes the library name link to the library’s home page.

• Catalog URL
  Makes the library name link to the library’s main catalog page.

Search

• Search automatically (default)
  The extension automatically starts searching when navigating to a page with an identified resource.

• Search on-demand
  The extension displays a search button when navigating to a page with an identified resource. This is useful if you don’t want automatic searches for every item across all your enabled library catalogs.

Icons

• Yes, show icons (default)
  Displays a small icon representing the type of item found (if known). For example, books show a book icon, audiobooks show headphones.

• No, I don’t want any icons
  Removes all item type icons from the display.

Results (Beta Feature)

• No, keep using the existing ‘best’ result behavior (default)
  The extension attempts to find a single, exact match for the resource. If multiple items match, only the first result will be displayed.

• Yes, I want all possible matches to be displayed
  The extension displays all matching results for the resource. This includes similarly named items and other media types (e.g., audiobooks, ebooks). Note: This can result in longer lists of matching items.

Media Types (Beta Feature)

This feature allows you to filter which types of media are initially displayed in results. Available media types:

• Audiobooks
• Blu-ray Discs
• Books (print, large print, etc.)
• Braille
• CD
• CD-ROM
• DVD
• eBooks
• Magazine
• Sound Recording
• Video
• Others (shown as “unknown”)

None of these are selected by default, which means all items are displayed. If any types are selected, the extension will initially show only those types. A button will appear if additional filtered items are available in the results.

Overdrive and Libby

This is a global setting that affects all Overdrive/Libby catalogs enabled for your account.

• Use Overdrive (default)
  Uses the legacy Overdrive website for searching and linking to results.

• Use Libby
  Uses the newer Libby website for searching and linking to results. The old Overdrive interface and app are being phased out in favor of Libby, so you may want to opt in ahead of time.

GoodReads Lists (Beta Feature)

This setting controls whether the Library Extension looks for library availability on GoodReads “list” pages (a page listing many items at once), in addition to individual book pages.

• No, don’t show up on my GoodReads lists (default)
  The extension does not attempt to identify or check items on GoodReads list pages.

• Yes, check my libraries for my list items
  The extension identifies individual items on GoodReads list pages and checks your libraries for each one.

Language Filtering (Beta Feature)

Filter catalog items that don’t match your browser’s preferred language. Items in a different language are hidden behind a button for additional items, rather than removed entirely.

• No, show all items regardless of language (default)
  Results include items in every language your library returns.

• Yes, filter items based on my language
  Results initially show only items in your browser’s detected language (the on-screen option names the language it detected, for example “Yes, I want to filter items based on my language (English)”).

Floating Results Box

The Library Extension can show your results in one of two ways: anchored directly into the page next to a book’s other purchase or borrowing options, or in a floating results box, a draggable, minimizable box that you can reposition and that remembers where you put it on a per-site basis.

• Off
  Always use the traditional, anchored results embedded in the page.

• Fallback (default)
  Use the anchored placement when the page has a spot for it. If the extension can’t find that spot on the page, it falls back to showing the floating results box instead, so you still see your results. This is the recommended setting.

• On
  Always use the floating results box, even on pages where anchored placement would have worked.

This setting is a permanent preference for how results are displayed everywhere. It’s different from the temporary, per-tab close button on the floating box itself: closing the box with its × button only hides it in that one browser tab until you reload or leave, and doesn’t change this setting. See Hiding the Results Box for how that works.

Search History

The Library Extension can keep a local record of your catalog searches, useful for diagnosing why a particular search didn’t turn up the results you expected.

• Enable search history (default)
  Searches are recorded as you browse. This history is stored locally in your browser (using IndexedDB) and is never sent to the Library Extension’s servers.

• Disable search history
  No new searches are recorded.

If search history is enabled, you can also choose how long records are kept before they’re automatically removed:

• 7 days
• 14 days (default)
• 30 days
• 90 days

Appearance

Choose how the Library Extension itself looks, including its popup and the floating results box.

• System default (default)
  Follows your operating system’s light or dark mode setting.

• Light
  Always use the light theme, regardless of your system setting.

• Dark
  Always use the dark theme, regardless of your system setting.
