Description

Exactly what the Library Extension sends, and never sends, when you choose to send error reports, and how to turn them on or off.
New in 2026.1103.1If you don't see this yet, your copy of the Library Extension may not have updated to this version. See how to check your installed version.

When a search at one of your libraries fails, the Library Extension can send us a short error report so we can find and fix the problem. Starting with version 2026.1103.1, reports are off until you choose to turn them on, and you can change your choice at any time under General Settings on the extension’s Options page.

What a report contains

  • which of your libraries had the problem, and which of its catalogs, along with the date our details for that library were last updated
  • the catalog’s website, such as https://catalog.mylibrary.org, without the rest of the address
  • a short status, such as a note that the catalog blocked the request
  • the error message and the places in the extension’s code where it happened. Error messages describe the extension’s code, though a message about a page the extension could not read may quote its first few characters, usually something like <!DOCTYPE html>
  • your Library Extension version
  • your browser and its version, and your operating system, as your browser reports them

What a report never contains

  • what you searched for: no titles, authors or ISBNs
  • the books you looked at, or the pages you visit
  • your name, email address, or library card details
  • your catalog logins
  • anything that identifies your copy of the extension

Like any request to our servers, a report arrives with your IP address, which our web server logs keep for up to 30 days. We do not store your IP address with the report. We keep error reports for 90 days and use them only to fix problems.

Firefox

Firefox asks for its own permission before an extension can send this kind of technical information. If you choose to send error reports, the extension opens its Options page so you can give Firefox that permission.

Earlier versions

Versions before 2026.1103.1 sent error reports automatically. They also sent more of the catalog’s web address: from version 2026.814.1 the address without the search part after the ?, and before that the full address, which could include what you searched for. Reports from those versions are deleted on the same 90 day schedule.
